fighting (in) the great depression

September 22nd, 2005 by epoyz

When I counted up my demons
Saw there was one for every day
With the good ones on my shoulder
I drove the other ones away.

If you ever feel neglected
If you think that all is lost
I’ll be countin’ up my demons, yeah,
Hoping everything’s not lost..

First things first: everyone out there on the path of Rita, our prayers go out to you. heard it’s gonna be stronger than Katrina, but at least everybody’s more prepared now. to my Ate and her peeps out there in houston, ingat sa evacuation, iwas sa panic, at sana ok sa pupuntahan nyo sa San Antonio. Holla back, girl.

if you haven’t seen Cinderella Man yet, don’t read the next paragraph, i might spoil it for you.

let me just state for the record that i don’t like russell crowe. i’d go as far as saying that i hate ‘im. hate ‘im, hate ‘im, hate ‘im. he’s way down there with tom cruise (cuckoo) and colin farrell (he’s an ass..) and cesar montano and bong revilla in my list (eh?). and it didn’t help that Gladiator fooled around with meg ryan’s heart. but i usually do hate on the player, but i still respect the game, so.. went to see Cinderella Man, and boy, was i happy that movie finally got shown in theaters. wondered what delayed the showing of that joint in here, when  in the US it was released months ago. heard that it was a bit of a flop back there, but it was never my habit to decide a movie’s worth based on box office returns, that’s why i went out and saw it on the first day of showing. and i know it’s the type of movie that’s made for me. i already mentioned how i love underdogs, comeback tales and bouncing-back-from-rock-bottom-stories and i can’t get enough of them.. and this movie did not disappoint me. plus, i failed to read the press releases for this so i wasn’t aware that james braddock became heavyweight champ of the world. there’s even a part in the beginning of the movie citing JJB’s story to be one of the most colorful among the champs, and still i wasn’t sure that he will be victorious in the end. that’s why everything was suspenseful for me, and that was really a good thing. kinda felt like when daniel san won in Karate KId when he broke out that crane-style shit. i was watching the fight scenes in Cinderella Man nervous as hell, man. punched the air when he won. whole movie moved me. the great depression was really depressing (ouch, sorry..). cried a bit, too, and i haven’t cried in the movies in a while. the last time that happened was when we went to see ‘lil bow-wow’s "Like Mike" in one of the expensive Shangri-La cinemas. tears streaming down my cheeks, i demanded "Soli nyo pera koh!!"..

also saw The Constant Gardener. was reeling from confusion all throughout the movie, but it was great, the ending was powerful. the whole idea for the movie is quite depressing, but it is a must-see. make sure you’re not sleepy when you go to see this, though. and try to find City Of God in dvd if you can. it’s from the same dude who made this, and it’s a lot more riveting.

i can’t believe that the men were asked to leave the studio for this. we’re entitled to the truth, yo, we should have been properly represented. heyhey, this is more about us than it is about you, girls, come on..

Mystique and the Cushman? never saw that coming… and was a bit surprised that they were almost the same age. I was rooting for Conan to bag this girl after she divorced John Stamos, though, but Chip Whitley got married before the breakup, so.. well, guess it just wasn’t meant to be, is all.

Mig Lost, and JD got the gig. well, can’t say he blew it, it’s just that he failed to shake off the theater in him.. and among the three, JD peaked at the right time, and seemed to be the best fit. just didn’t like the format of the finale, the way it was handled where they dropped one of the finalists after one song, and especially because Mig never got the chance to play with INXS in the finale. come on, that’s just one extra song, you old geezers. what, your old bones can’t do four straight songs anymore?

and i’m guessing they already had a choice before the actual show. felt that they were being a bit dismissive, especially to Mig. oh, well, at least he got as far as he did. and it also looked to me that Marty was stunned that he didn’t win. he couldn’t blink for a whole minute. hehee..

China blew out Saudi Arabia, 98-10, in a FIBA tournament game. well, my only beef with this was that the chinese were hoisting three pointers near the end, trying to break into triple digits. i mean, come on.. it’s just a bit too unsportsmanlike. it’s okay if you were practicing set plays or experimenting with player combinations, but when the outcome is already settled you don’t need to humiliate your opponents some more. i expected more class from a team competing in an international competition. a win is a win, boys. it lessens the accomplishment when you try shit like this.

and i learned long ago that stats don’t mean a damn thing. i like counting the pats on my back after a game, specially when you win and your teammates acknowledge your contribution. and it’s a big bonus if the other team gives you your props for playing them.

aaaaand… was confused by this article: there are gay priests? right now? word? i was under the impression that homosexuality and same-sex arrangements aren’t just frowned upon among us catholics, i also thought the church is adamant in enforcing this no-third-sex-shit. well, at least if a priest was confused i never thought his issues would be out there to be discussed, right? personally, i think it’s the way he handles himself, and it’s really difficult to be open about this if you want to enter priesthood. do things need to be resolved first? are there more acceptable sorts of temptations and personal tests for a priest for our guardians in the Vatican? and how sure are the folks in there that a gay applicant won’t sneak in, then? they’re going to employ the help of the already-ordained gay priests and let them use their "Gaydar"? it’s going to be effective but this is just messed up, man, i don’t know. this just muddled it up some more for me, i’m telling you.

and hey, just to be clear, i have a few friends who are on a different social agenda, and i like them a lot. they true peeps, G. i guess i can say that i love gay people. wait a minute, that didn’t sound right…

okay, do this one with me, now..

…Singing out o yeah
o yeah
o yeah
Everything’s not lost…

…Come on yeah, o yeah,
Sing out yeah…
Everything’s not lost..
