don’t call it a comeback
September 28th, 2005 by epoyz
This afternoon i threw 80 bucks down the drain. never was comfortable with throwing away money, no matter how small the amount is. if someone gets to use it, i don’t mind, or if i drop some cash and someone finds it, i’m cool with that. i just don’t feel that way if i know i just threw it away, ticks me off. so let me tell you, then, of the eighty bucks i’m never going to see again.
after running and doing rehab on my knee at the gym i’m feeling more tuckered out than usual, mainly because i’ve been skipping my sessions for three weeks. i was dragging myself around the mall and i was planning to go see a movie later that day anyway so i decided to go plop my ass in a moviehouse seat and rest my rapidly aging body. it was a wednesday, and the new movies that were out included "the transporter 2" and "the perfect man". now..
i wanted to see the transporter sequel, although i was a bit apprehensive because normally sequels just ride out the impact of the first one, and turn out almost always to be duds. i’m thinking, maybe i’ll wait it out, wait to ask someone who has seen it if it was any good, then i’ll go see it. heah? (i’m pointing at my temple while nodding to indicate that i’m doing something smart..). so i decided to favor "the perfect man", i was looking for a comedy and thought this might do it for me. hey, i’m there to rest and i usually can’t tolerate action scenes and violence when i’m in this state. ( notice how i defended my choice too much, like i’m sounding too afraid that people will see through me that i’m getting more gay by the minute? oh-kaaay..)
so. paid the ticket, it was early afternoon, no one would really notice if i snuck in the hillary duff movie all alone.. only, once i’m inside i realized that i got the cinema number wrong, and i bought a ticket to "the constant gardener", which i already saw last week. i thought of telling the usherette the mistake i made, and thought maybe she’ll let me transfer to "the perfect man". but i thought to myself: do i really want to do that? scenes started popping inside my head, one with the cinema people helping me out but all the while announcing to anyone within earshot that "nagkamali daw si sir, gusto niya magpa-transfer sa perfect man.." and the teller would say "saan? sa perfect man? yung kay hillary? mag-isa lang ba si sir? o sige..", with the guards and the other ushers and all them helping my cause at the same time announcing to the whole world that "yes, this man wasn’t forced into watching a hillary duff movie, he’s by himself, look at him, a fine specimen of a man.. and he’s here to watch carson kressley’s first movie appearance…"
dropped the whole thing and proceeded instead to my periodic mall inspection. would’ve loved to see that movie, though. what? i had a crush on heather locklear a while back. that’s the reason why i went for this flick. i’m not joining the federation. che!
one movie i would recommend this week is "the perfect catch" ("fever pitch" in the states..). it’s an age-old story of a love triangle between a man, a woman and sports. it’s a classic. the movie was funny, heartbreaking, thought-provoking (if you’re a sports fan) and you can relate to it in so many ways (again, IF you’re a sports fan or a girlfriend of a hopeless one..). i was even surprised to learn that it was a farrely bros. movie, loosely based on a book by "about a boy" author nick hornby ( his book was about soccer…) that was already made into a film in 1997 starring colin firth..
i really enjoyed the movie, plus, it culminated into the real-life events surrounding the greatest comeback in sports history, the 2004 AL series when the red sox came from a 0-3 deficit to defeat the greatest team in baseball, the new york yankees, in seven games. i especially remember this one, because even though i’m not much of a baseball fan, i was well aware of the "curse of the bambino", the way the red sox were always being screwed by the yankees in the postseason, their 86-year title drought, and the red sox nation, the most loyal fans in the face of the earth. well, they finally got theirs, with the 2004 red sox eventually rolling through the world series with four wins, rewarding their long-suffering fans with something no one will ever take from them for eternity. i was rooting for them, the same way i rooted for the phillies when the blue jays beat them, and the indians and the braves and the mets and every world series loser, except for the marlins and the diamondbacks. i was following the red sox because of curt schilling and pedro martinez, and when they went down 0-3 against the hated yankees ( underdog lover, me..) with a 19-8 loss at home…i knew it was over, but something was telling me it ain’t. then game 4 happened. i said, okay, at least they fought hard not to get swept. then a game 5 win. i thought, if they can win game 6, they can definitely do this.
well, they did, schilling’s bleeding ankle and all, and went on to hammer out a game 7 86-year redemption. if they went on to lose the world series, it wouldn’t have mattered, because they handed to the yankees, winner of 26 world series after Boston’s last one in 1918, the most humiliating collapse in the history of baseball. but, they didn’t disappoint the red sox nation, and put their stamp in history. the curse has been lifted, and you just want them to have that.
damn movie made a grown man cry, there. i’m not ashamed to admit this, because i am passionate about my sports teams. you love them, but they don’t seem to love you back. they break your heart so many times but still, you’re there for them. until that one great moment where they put it all together, and give you something nobody can ever take away. naks(hikbi..).
not much in the news today, just ashton and demi getting married. ashton was 9 years old when demi and bruce got married? damn. and it ticks me off how articles kept referring to kutcher as demi’s boytoy. they can have a serious relationship, right? if a 59-year old billionaire is having a baby with a 35-year old model, it’s more acceptable? come on..
grant hill is ready for a full season, and the comeback is looking great!! i’m excited to see my boy tear the league up like he did when jordan was still around. dude inspires me.
and! he’s always been my dog, but i hated on gary payton when he teamed up with karl malone on the lakers in 2003-04. now i welcome him with open arms, as he goes for that ring this time with the heat. now that’s more like it. would have loved it more had they not shipped eddie jones, though.
it’s like 1996 again!! woo-hoo!!
okay, gotta go. missed the start of one tree hill and the replay is on. hey..

Now everyone can see (Secret secret, I’ve got a secret)
My true identity..
